Planting Preparation

For successful planting, prepare a trench approximately 6 inches wide and 8 inches deep, spacing potato rows 3 feet apart. Incorporate rotted manure or organic compost at the trench bottom, ensuring a soil conditioner is used. Plant seed potato pieces, cut side down, every 12 to 14 inches, covering them with 3 to 4 inches of soil. Use clean, sharp paring knives to cut large potatoes into golf ball-sized pieces, ensuring each piece has at least 2 eyes.

Cutting should be done 1 to 2 days prior to planting to allow for healing, forming a protective layer over cut surfaces. As sprouts appear 12 to 16 days after planting, gently fill the trench with another 3 to 4 inches of soil. Repeat this process for several weeks, leaving the soil mounded 4 to 5 inches above ground level. Add organic mulch between rows to conserve moisture, aid weed control, and cool the soil.
